Figural Baby Head Bottle, Tooled Top

edited February 2014 in Question and Answer
Hello Chris,
I found this interesting baby head bottle. It is 5.5 inches in height and has a tooled stem and top. The body of the bottle has three seams, two of which run down each shoulder and one that runs down the middle of the face and torso of the baby. In regards to embossing, the word TRADEMARK is on the lower back along with a single letter T on the bottom.
I would really appreciate any information about this bottle. Do you know the approximate year / what it is worth?

Thanks,
Ryan

  • Here are two more pics. Thanks
  • I am not sure what product this bottle was created for - would be an interesting research project.

If you search the interwebs for "crying baby figural bottle" like I did, then you will come across a site that references a similar example that is base embossed "T.P.S. & Co." which this person suggests is a mark for T.P. Spencer & Company in New York City.

The back of their bottle is marked with a patent date (June 2nd, 1874) which would be a start for research...could be a design patent but who knows.

I am a bit skeptical that this bottle contained a medicine but I suppose it is possible.

As for value - there was a time that clear figural bottles would fetch in the neighborhood of $100. My hunch is that this one is not that scarce so perhaps in the $50-100 range.

  • Don Fadely's page on Spencer will also be of interest. It includes a patent #

It would appear that Don's patent # is incorrect.

See this one instead (patent # 151,802)

As the patent application says, "a glass bottle for perfumery"
