edited August 2012 in Question and Answer
I acquired this bottle and believe it'd old.

Can you tell me more about it.

Thanks,

Greg

  • I suspect the mold seam goes all the way to the top of the lip and has a horizontal seam just below the lip as well??? This info will be helpful in dating.
  • I don't see a mold seam and the glass exterior is distorted a swirly. Does not look like a machine blown bottle.

  • I cannot believe this, but there is a very very faint seam... I didn't event see it. It barely goes half up the bottle. Here are some more pics. What kind of pontil is it?? if it is one.

    Thanks,
    Greg
  • One more thing, it's 9" tall and 2-1/4" at the base. Also, when you put your finger in the top, it feels tapered to fit a cork.

  • It looks free blown to me with a ground pontil
  • Of your original 3 pictures, the middle close-up shot of the lip/mouth definitely shows mold seams. One might think this is a much earlier bottle but I believe this is an early machine made bottle. The mark on the base may be a poorly formed valve mark but it is definitely not a pontil scar.

As for use - mineral water or wine most likely.
  • Do you know the year?
