looks like some sort of whiskey or wine jug but i could be wrong

I would agree that the shape suggests a liquor bottle. Someone obviously went to great length to protect the bottle for continuous use.

Yes, I do think it is old. My best estimate would be 1890-1940. One sees a lot of liquor bottles of this shape during that time period.

You have to admit it would not exactly win any beauty contests. It certainly is an honest antique item but I am not sure anyone would pay a whole lot for it. IMHO.
