Black sea glass. Looking for info, possible date etc

This week I found a piece of what I thought was a stoneware bottle. I researched black seaglass and did the 'light test to discover it is translucent and dark green. It has lettering on it and it was found on the shores of Loch Long in Scotland, UK. People have mentioned pontil marks. Can anyone assist with maker, age etc please? I'd love to know it's history.

  • Thanks for posting and sorry for the long delay in replying to you!

Your sherd is a good example of why dark olive green glass is frequently referred to as "black glass" - your spirits bottle probably dates to the third quarter of the 19th century.

Here is one example of the kind of bottle that this might be part of:

The majority of black glass bottles do not have applied seals so in that regard it's not the best example but it does have base embossing and is of the same era.

  • It's likely to be an ale or stout bottle, something like these, but not exactly like 'em.
