glass bottle help

edited April 2013 in Question and Answer
I found this bottle while kayaking today. It was wedged under a limestone outcrop on the Brazos River in Texas. Unfortunately there are no markings. There is a seam that runs up two opposing corners, but stops half way between the ridge around the base of the neck and the mouth of the bottle. It is about 7.5 inches tall and 2.25 inches on each side. Can you tell me anything about this bottle?

  • Hi Gary

Welcome - this is a pickle or food bottle which dates from later in the 19th century. Plain examples like this are fairly common - collectors seek the fancy examples with embossed gothic or "cathedral" decoration
