Owens-Illinois bottle

edited March 2013 in Question and Answer
Looking for help on the last piece of the puzzle. Found an old bottle buried and I've been able to research most of the information on it. I think it was used for medicine prescriptions.

Middle Symbol--Manufacturer-- Owens-Illinois
12- The plant it was built--No. 12-, Gas City, Ind., T. A. Collins, 5 furnaces, 11 machines
7 –Year 1937 (single digit usage from 1929-1946)
19-Mold (2 piece cup bottom mold)

The last part I can't find anything on is the "A-S" at the top of the base stamp. Anyone know what this stands for?

  • I solved my own puzzle. The A-S stands for Alka-Seltzer. These bottles were only from 1935 and 1937.
  • Good detective work! I was thinking this might be an abbreviation for a manufacturing plant name (since O-I merged many plants in 1929) not a product name.

I would be interested to know where you found your latest info - on Alka Seltzer.

  • I found it in a report online from a dig site that was supported by Bill Lindsey and Bill Lockhart. The same type of bottle was found at that site and those two were contacted to identify. The last picture I uploaded was from the page in the report.
