I purchased these old bottles at a flea market. was wondering in anyone had any info on them. The seam goes up to about where the bottle starts to curve.

  • Hi Sarah

Both of your bottles date to late 19th century.

The round bodied bottle could have been used for any number of applications from bulk chemicals to food. It has an applied lip.

The oval bodied bottle was commonly used for household ammonia. You will not have to look too hard online to find an example with a label. It has a tooled lip which is a bit later in the evolutionary process: bottle production in the late 19th c moved from all hand work to semi-production then just 10-20 years later to a fully automated process.

Both bottles have staining or etching from being buried in the ground - a portion of the glass composition leaches and leaves a white appearance
  • Here is a picture of an ammonia bottle - this one is currently at auction on ebayimage.
  • Thank you so much Historic for getting back to me!! I appreciate it.
It's nice to know a little more about your treasures. I assume these two are pretty commonplace, huh?
  • Honest old bottles but yes, fairly common.
