Small Skinny Bottle and All

edited May 2012 in Question and Answer
So I found this bottle below a cliff on the Chowan River, which is located in Northeastern NC. I noticed that it has a seam that goes all the way up the lip which means it must have been made with a mold and probably dated during the late 1800s or after. Does anyone know what the bottle may have been used for or how old it could be? It has what I believe to be a 3 or B on one side of the bottle base and a 5 on the other.

I think this bottle may have found its way into the river by erosion of the cliff and a possible old trash heap up above.
  • Bottles in the riverbank - Another Riverside Attraction?

Rectangular bodied bottles like this with recessed panels were used for either medicine or food. I associate this especially tall, skinny form with flavorings or extracts. My photo below is from a recent ebay auction - the packaging tells all.

Fortunately or unfortunately depending on one's perspective garbage often was dumped into rivers. Other items floated in floods, were buried for some time only to be revealed later by shifting river bank materials. I have heard heard a number of stories in recent years about snorkeling and scuba diving in rivers which have yielded some fairly good bottles.

Your bottle was machine made, but in a mold, in the early 20th century.
