Found piece of bottle need help identifying

We found this piece of a glass bottle tonight with the inscription "L. Beyfus & Co. S'Julien Bordeaux 1846". We're thinking it may be the bottom of an old ink bottle? It's round and a little over an inch in diameter. Any ideas?

  • This is an applied seal from a Bordeaux wine bottle. L. Beyfus is no doubt a bulk buyer and bottler rather than one of the chateaux (vineyards) which produced wine under their own label.

St. Julien is one of the municipalities ("communes") in the Haut-Medoc region of Bordeaux. The "1846" refers to the founding or other event in the history of St. Julien.

The bottle probably contained a blended red wine, good but not excellent.

  • Thanks! That's interesting. So any idea of it's age? (I'm guessing it's newer than the 1800's, correct?)

  • It's difficult to say anything definitive about age without the bottle. My guess is late 1800s/TOC. More than 100 years old.
  • That's close enough. Thanks again!
