Very Large Pale Blue Bottle

Can anyone tell me what type of bottle this is and if it is old or a reproduction? It stands about 25" tall and is 15" wide. If I am reading it correctly the bottom says "Bottle made by GPD 1860 Gardena Calif."

  • Thanks for posting

Your bottle is called a demijohn or carboy, general terms for large bottles for transport of bulk liquids. It dates to the late 19th century.
  • I'd call this a carboy. It might have been used as a water bottle, or it might have been used as a "fermenter" for wine-making.
  • Thank you so much for the information. Any idea on value?

  • Value is not much . . . if you can find a buyer at all. Colorless/aqua glass big bottles are at the low end of demand. And this bottle has little "character." Maybe $10 - $20, if you're lucky. Search for "The Demijohn Page" to learn more about these big bottles.
