Help identifying the value of this Dutch bottle

edited September 2011 in Question and Answer
I found this stoneware bottle recently, and am perplexed as to it's value. It says (handwritten in the clay) "Levert & Co. Amsterdam. Anno 1690." on one side, and "federal law forbids sale or re-use of this bottle" on the other side. It's about 3 pounds and 12 inches tall. How can I tell if it was really made in 1690? How do i find out how much it's worth?

  • Follow a google-search to http://www.gin-bottles.com/LEVERT and you will see that this is a current distillery (gin) which dates back to 1690, -- and that they like to sell their product in bottles that lookantique. So your bottle is likely 20th century (based simply on the text imprinted on the reverse: "federal law forbids sale or re-use of this bottle"). Bottle collectors will give you better advice on collectible value but rest assured you are not holding a 1690 antique.
