I have a jar I found in the ocean cant make out the marking on the bottom to try and figure out if it is an original or not. I am wondering if anyone can help me I will post pictures soon.
There are literally hundreds of variants of the MASONS PATENT 1858 jars...subtle differences in molds, embossing variants, etc. The RED BOOK OF FRUIT JARS documents them.
Some can get valuable - one needs to know precisely what all the markings are: front, rear and base.
Another detail worth noting is whether to top opening is ground or just the mold finish. This may be difficult to tell with all the grunge and barnacles..

I do believe this is a 19th century canning jar.
