Grandma's Odd Jar

It seems like this would be an easy jar to identify, but have so far come up completely empty handed. The clear jar measures approx 2.5" tall and 3" dia bottom. The inside oval "well" measures approx 1" x1.25" OD. Writing on the bottom of the jar outside ring reads " SEPT. 5, 1899. PAT. U.S. AND ENGLAND." Center ring reads "MAY 23 1899 CANADA". There is a number "534" in the very center. I have another similar one with a side "well", but no markings. Any ideas?

  • This is a really interesting piece which obviously had some specialty application.

Some patent research might shed light on things but a warning that this is easier said than done even with the precise date...
