What is this glass object?

I received an inquiry about this object - it is an interesting thing so I wanted to post it here.

    I first recall seeing one of these in my grandparent's house in North Carolina - it is an odd enough thing and it attracts attention.

    It also, if properly baited, attracts the attention of flies. Flies go in to seek the bait (food items, sweet liquid) and get stuck inside. Here is a page with a few more examples
