Yes. You have what is called a battery jar. This is the container for an early era wet cell battery. The "guts" would sit inside....consisting of a carbon rod, etc. and there would be a cover - most covers I have seen are ceramic.
These are very collectible.
I am familiar with the common ones - this particular one I do not recall seeing before.
