This is a juice or liquid container of some kind and could be as recent as the 1980s.
Legislation from the 1970s brought back the notion of deposits for carbonated beverages, but I am not exactly sure when the widespread re-use of beverage bottles and the deposit systems originally died out. Probably 1950s and 60s as business became less local and more mass-produced by national companies.
